GameStop CEO predicts Nintendo’s Future

GameStop Fat-Cat Don Matteo has been reading his crystal ball and come up with a few interesting if totally unsurprising Nintendo Wii tidbits…

Telling CNBC, Matteo explains that now Wii supply has met demand, NIntendo can line-up a price cut in the not too distant future:

“I think [demand for] the Wii could slow down to the extent that Nintendo may want to cut the price, Nintendo has it within its arsenal to do that. The component costs have come down considerably. [Nintendo] used to break even on the Wii, but now they’re making a considerable margin.”

Ok so that is all true. What about software Matteo?

“We think there will be a Nintendo key property coming out by the end of the year. They haven’t given us any insight, but they have told us to reserve [shelf] space.”

Anyone who thinks Nintendo don’t have key property coming out later this year frankly needs their heads examined. With Nintendo’s new policy of not releasin software details until the project is nearing completion, it is acceptable to assume there are many first-party titles being worked on now that will be released in 2009 that only Nintendo know about.

Excitebots for example was only shown a few months ago for the first time and is due for release next month.

The only real question here is ‘what key property are Nintendo referring to?’. My guess is that it is not the recently announced Zelda: Spirit Tracks. It could of course be anything – a new Mario, Wii Fit, Kid Icarus or even a new Pilotwings (please!).

As always with Nintendo being tight lipped, only time (E3) will tell.
