Sega’s MadWorld Sells 66K In The U.S.

Following on from our post GTA: Chinatown Wars post earlier showing disappointing sales, comes similar news for Platinum Games title MadWorld, published by Sega. The gore-fest only managed to sell 66,000 copies in the U.S last month and while not a complete disaster, this news does not bode well for receiving more mature titles on Nintendo platforms in the future.
I feel for third party developers and publishers trying to make a go of capitalising on Nintendo’s hardware. We have had some very good recent efforts of mature titles such as GTA, MadWorld, House of the Dead to name a few and none of them have sold spectacularly.
You can see why most developers would prefer PS3 or Xbox 360 to be market leaders then they do not have to compete with Nintendo’s first party titles and find it easier to succeed.
I find it very disheartening that the excellent GTA could not sell more than 89,000 copies on the console with the largest worldwide install base of over 100 million. Similarly the same with MadWorld on a console of over 50 million install base.
Maybe really, there are just not many ‘hardcore’ gamers left on the Wii and DS and in fact 99% of their audience really is mums, grans and toddlers.
Nice try Rockstar and Sega.
