3D is being touted as the next big thing. Sony have their new 3D TV’s, more films are being made in 3D and Nintendo have announced their next portable console, the Nintendo 3DS will have 3D capabilities. So what does the gaming industry think about 3D tech? MCV got to find out from some big developers and publishers.
Namco Bandai Partners chief Olivier Comte – “Natal and Move are two new tools, but I don’t think either are the next revolution of games. I believe the next revolution will be 3D. I have tested some 3D games and I think it is a big change.”

While SquareEnix are predicting that 3D will not become the next big thing, Ubisoft are thinking differently, estimating that 50% of games will be in 3D by 2012.
“We will see more and more product coming in 3D on 360 and PS3 but also on portable machines. We can count on substantial grown in the 3D market just because it’s more immersive, so it will be a good way for the industry to give even more emotion to the gamers. I think next year we should see maybe 15-20% of games will be 3D on next-gen consoles … and the following year will be at least 50% of the games.” – Ubisoft (conference call)

So yesterday Nintendo announced the successor to the amazingly awesome DS – the Nintendo 3DS. That means until we get more concrete details from Nintendo themselves (probably not until E3) there will be hundreds of rumours and guesses about what the console consists of as well as what games will appear on it.
Today we have the first rumour! Could a new Pokemon game be in the works for the 3DS? Probably. Last year Nintendo placed an ad for a 3D artist to join the Pokemon development team and then the big N announced that a new generation Pokemon game would be with us in the winter of 2010/11 – the same time the 3DS is due.
Hmm… Related or not? Could well be likely.
You would be mad to think that a new Pokemon game would not appear on any Nintendo console at some point, considering that the games still sell in their millions. Whether this means a new Pokemon 3D is being readied for the consoles launch is anyone’s guess but the above facts seem to point in that direction. Only Nintendo know for sure!
