News, Views and Speculation for all things Nintendo…

The upcoming Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle will give consumers their first-ever chance to play upcoming Wii™ and Nintendo DS™ games. Visitors to Nintendo’s booth (#352) will be able to get their hands on games such as Donkey Kong Country™ Returns, Kirby’s Epic Yarn™, GoldenEye 007 from Activision Publishing, Inc. and NBA JAM from EA SPORTS™. Fluidity, a new game for Nintendo’s WiiWare™ downloadable game service, will also make its debut at PAX.

Nintendo’s Fluidity combines an amazing physics engine that realistically models flowing water with innovative puzzle game play. Using the three forms of water – liquid, ice and cloud – players will solve challenging puzzles across multiple chapters of an illustrated magical book called Aquaticus. The game offers detailed tutorials that introduce basic game mechanics, but the complexity quickly ramps up as special powers are acquired and enemies are introduced, testing players’ reflexes and ingenuity.

It’s great to hear Miyamoto is still as passionate about making games now as he always has been. Let’s hope he continues for many years to come yet!

“Before the launch of the Wii hardware, we at Nintendo had already come up with the idea that the Wii is the machine that’s going to be hooked up with the television set in the living room of the household. And so then the family members become the basis for us to think about how we’d like to develop the hardware and software for Wii. And that is why I’ve made software like Wii Music, Wii Sports, Wii Fit and other assorted titles. Having said that, I’ve never lost my passion for making games which are enjoyed by the more traditional gamer. An example is the introduction of Super Mario Galaxy 2.” – Shigeru Miyamoto

Shigeru Miyamoto

Phew! We can all breathe a sigh of relief. Shigeru Miyamoto recently told GamesTM in an interview that he doesn’t have any plans to retire soon. The Nintendo legend of course is the man behind many of Nintendo’s top franchises such as Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda and he is now the head of development at Nintendo, ensuring standards remain high.

Miyamoto on retirement…

“Well, I am one of the company workers and the company has to retire me some time. So from that perspective, yes I may have to retire from Nintendo some day. But when I look around and see how aged cartoonists continue to work on their manga and how movie directors create new movies all the time, I understand that they would never retire. And by the same token, I guess I will still be making games somehow. The only question is whether the younger people will be willing to work with me at that far point in the future.”

Check out the full interview after the jump where Miyamoto talks about loads of other stuff including the Vitality Sensor, whether talk of a Wii HD frustrates him and why Nintendo stay away from violent games….

Super Paper Mario

Nintendo has the longest history of creating quality games out of all the three current console makers. Some of the most memorable characters and franchises have been built and evolved over the last twenty years across multiple consoles, culminating in hundreds of amazing games. Though millions and millions have enjoyed popular titles such as Super Mario 64, Mario Kart and Zelda, there are some games that didn’t get the recognition they deserved and sold poorly in comparison.

Here I dig out ten of these titles. While they were a critical success, they failed to get in many gamers hands deserved for one reason or another. Most of you would have played some of, if not all of these games, but there are also many people that missed out on these gems.

The ten games after the jump all deserve your time to track down to see what you’re missing. Luckily eBay makes this an easy task. Read more…
