These snippets of developers comments about the 3DS come from the last issue of Nintendo Power.

Goichi Suda (Suda 51) – President & director, Grasshopper Manufacture:

“My first impressions of it was, ‘This is the toy of the future.” You can feel just how far and how fast games have evolved when you see the Nintendo 3DS. We’ve entered an era where we can bring worlds that we can almost touch and feel to life. Thus far, 3D has only been expressed with 2D. I think we’ve graduated from that and reached an age of expressing real depth through 3D with the 3DS.”

Matt Bozon – Creative director, WayForward

“I’ve stood in line for a lot of Nintendo unveils over the years, but even expecting to be amazed, seeing the Nintendo 3DS in person induced a sort of visual shell-shock. The system is as hypnotic as Turkish Delight and looks like a Hogwarts newspaper. The demos that showed games, movies, and photography in the third dimension had to be seen firsthand to be truly appreciated, with elements popping off the glass or dipping into the distance. When my play time was over and the friendly (but strong) Nintendo lady wrenched the system away, my phone, laptop, and other devices became flat, boring wastes of Z-space by comparison. But what excites me the most about this fancy pants is that it’s in the hands of Nintendo, so the games are going to be as brilliant as the machine itself. Can! Not! Wait!”

Well I hope the game that Ian Curran, Global VP at THQ is hyping below lives up to the hype. If it’s as good as he makes out, it should be awesome!

“There’s something else that we’re going to reveal later on in the year that wasn’t at E3, which is just very, very innovative. There are very few people who know about it at the moment. It’s not another Kinect thing – it’s to do with the Wii. People are talking about Kinect and Move at the moment, understandably – but if we’d have had this at E3, people would have been talking about this as a significant step forward for the Wii as well. Maybe [we'll show it at] Gamescom.”

Ok, this is getting crazy! The 3DS must blow you away when you have it in your hands as so many people have so many good things to say about it. It really feels Nintendo have got everything right with this one and the quotes from the Japanese developers below seem to confirm this too:

Hideo Kojima

“I wear glasses, so I’m happy that 3D glasses are not needed. I directed the E3 demo. It was based off Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater, but the backgrounds and character modeling were all redone in high polygon. It’s not finalized, but we’re thinking about CO-OPs and other things — elements fitting of a 3D and portable game machine.”

Suda 51

“I was able to feel the speed of video game history and also the feeling of ‘We’ve come this far.’ To express the game I want to make in a word, it’s ‘The Next Game.’ Nintendo 3DS is the arrival of ‘The Next Hardware.’ So, ‘The Next Game.’”

Hideki Kamiya

“Games with dynamic scale are okay too, but I personally would like to take a different approach from the large screen and make a 3D game where you can enjoy the feeling of existence of portable 3D.”

Toshihiro Nagoshi (Super Monkey Ball 3DS)

“If future portable game machines demand that both social aspects and immersion be satisfied for when you play multiplayer and single player for instance, 3DS firmly answers these with Wi-Fi and 3D. I’d like to make a variety of proposals.”

Nagoshi also said that he believes the 3DS is an expected “conclusion” from Nintendo, feeling that starting with the 3DS, the company has seemed to have pursued game hardware as toys.

More after the break.
