Natal

Reggie sat down with Matt from IGN to talk about the shape of the Wii, the PS3 Move and Natal among many other things. Unfortunately and unsurprisingly, the NOA exec was not very forthcoming with Zelda news even with Matt’s best attempts at trying to squeeze info out of him. E3 can’t come round quick enough.

Interesting read though.

IGN: So — you got anything that can compete against Sony’s revolutionary Move controller and sub-controller?

[Reggie leans back in his chair and laughs for several moments.]

Reggie Fils-Aime: So, if imitation is the most sincere form of flattery then I am blushing I’m so flattered.

You know, I didn’t see the announcement. I did spend some time at the booth and saw some of what they were demonstrating and I think the question isn’t how will we react — I think the question is, so what is it that’s going to be compelling to the consumer in what they’re doing? From our standpoint, motion control is core to what we do. We believe that we’ve brought a range of different experiences that utilize the motion controller and we pride ourselves on being innovators in the space and we’re going to continue to innovate. I think the key question is, how will they respond when we continue to innovate if this is their best effort?

Natal

Last year we heard via FT.com that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata turned down Xbox 360 Natal-like technology for the Wii which featured a camera to detect motion and speech recognition. Now C&VG have been told that in 2007 “Israel firm 3DV Systems showed an early demo of the technology to Iwata and other Nintendo bigwigs at the end of 2007″ and though Iwata was impressed with the tech itself, he was concerned about the price and had concerns over latency.

“Iwata-san only ever invests in something he can guarantee will work for a Nintendo audience. 3DV showed off a camera that detected motion in 3D, and had voice recognition – but Iwata-San was unconvinced he could sell it at a Nintendo price point. He also had some worries around latency during gameplay.”

Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft Motion Controllers

Now that all three console makers have revealed their plans for motion control on their respective consoles, you may be wondering how different they all are and what advantages they have over each other.

Wii MotionPlus is adding 1:1 accuracy to the wiimote, a function that gamers have really wanted from the beginning. Sony have developed similar tech to Nintendo with an added camera, however there are still many questions to be answered by Sony, not least a final design, price and release date. Microsoft have decided not to imitate Nintendo like Sony have and rather be innovative themselves with what many see as an advancement over the wiimote.

Thatvideogameblog have dissected all three technologies and given their view on the possible pro’s and con’s for each motion sensing peripheral.

First let’s look at Nintendo’s Wii MotionPlus…
