On Mario’s storylines..
“I realized that whether it’s story or movies, it’s not about whether we need them or don’t need them. What’s most important is that the game resonates. You notice things like how a certain enemy wasn’t scary, but the next time a similar one appears, its color is a little different and it spits out two rocks instead of one, so you think it must be tougher. You reason things out for yourself and put them to the test. This kind of interaction is interesting.” – Shigeru Miyamoto

It seems that “Super Mario Galaxy 2” will not have the usual 3D hub like we have been used to since “Mario 64“, instead it will have a map similar to “Super Mario Bros. Wii“.
Personally I find this quite disappointing as I like exploring the 3D hub worlds, but then I should hold my judgement until I play it.
Here’s what Miyamoto had to say on the matter:
“You can think of it in terms of something similar to Super Mario World or New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where you will have a rather convenient map to navigate. We want players to focus on the joy of the action instead of getting to each game course. We wanted to make it as accessible as possible and as easy as possible for the players. Also because we’re going to incorporate a number of different stars and conquering all the stars is going to be one of the most challenging missions for the player, we want them to understand as easy as possible where they should go next and which places they should go back to in order to get access to the remaining stars.” – Shigeru Miyamoto
