Nintendo of Europe’s managing director, Lauret Fischer believes there is still plenty of life left in the Wii yet despite many analysts and industry professionals starting to write the console off. This trend has been increasing recently especially now that Xbox and Playstation will soon have their motion controlled devices soon available and many believe that the Wii will not be able to compete with the hi-def consoles:

“I think you just need to look at the facts to see this is not true – we achieved global sales of 20 million units of Wii in the last financial year alone. Our aim has always been to expand the gaming population and with European sales of Wii now over 22 million we have taken some steps towards achieving this. However, there are still many more people out there who have not yet experienced the fun of video games and we hope to continue to provide compelling reasons for these people to consider buying a Wii. Wii regained its momentum in the second half of last year and the continued good sales of New Super Mario Bros. Wii and other major titles has kept this momentum going. We believe the strong software line-up this year – with the imminent launch of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and further strong titles such as Wii Party and Metroid: Other M in the pipeline – will help to maintain this momentum.”

Robert Lowe, Nintendo of Europe’s marketing manager believes that Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be one of this years biggest hits. Who are we to argue?

“Super Mario Galaxy 2 is being widely acclaimed as Mario’s greatest adventure yet – which is saying something, given the sheer quality of his previous outings – both on Wii and other Nintendo consoles. We fully expect this game to be one of the biggest hits of the year, anybody who even has a passing interest in video games needs to experience this title. It’s simply amazing. We hope this will be one of the biggest Mario launches in the UK to date. Mario Kart Wii is the current record holder, and the buzz around Galaxy 2 is even bigger. It’s a very different type of game but we think the gaming public will be astounded how the EAD team have managed to improve on a virtually flawless predecessor. We also hope that those people who entered the Mario world with New Super Mario Bros Wii will make the next step onto Super Mario Galaxy 2 and find it as amazing as astounding and beautiful as we have. Galaxy 2 is the biggest launch of the year on Wii – and this is reflected in the campaign we’ve put behind it.”- Nintendo marketing manager Robert Lowe
