Jimmy seems pretty impressed with 3DS!
Many people, myself included, believe that Nintendo’s weak spot over recent years has been their online functionalities for Wii and DS. Though it is great to have the Virtual Console and some online games like Mario Kart, Nintendo’s online efforts are definitely a step back compared to the Playstation Network and Xbox Live.
Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata and NOA chief exec Reggie Fils-Aime seem to agree to, here’s what they have to say on the matter.
“We look at what we do well. We look at what we don’t do so well. The things we don’t do so well we commit ourselves to fixing and making improvements. I would put our digital business in that second category. We are looking hard at our digital business and saying, ‘You know what? We can do better.’ And we will do better. It will not look like what our competitors are doing. But we will have more content, have it be more easily discoverable. We will make it engaging and a much bigger piece of our overall business.” -Reggie Fils-Aime

The Reggie-nator has confirmed what Nintendo said before – that the 3DS will be available in the ‘major markets’ by March 2011. That probably includes Japan, North America, Australia and most European countries.
“The one thing, for sure, is that we will launch in all of our major markets by March 31, 2011.”
That’s good to hear!

Stating the slightly obvious, Nintendo executive Riggie Fils-Aime has gone on record with Business Week stating that the upcoming DS replacement handheld console, the Nintendo 3DS will be their “next handheld platform“.
Go for it Reggie!
“We have ideas of what we want to bring to the consumer that we can’t do with the current [DS model]. The Nintendo 3DS for us is our next handheld platform. Fundamentally, this business is about software, not hardware. Software is what drives engagement by the consumer. For us technology is not the end, it’s the means to an end, which is around a great consumer experience.” – Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime

Reggie sat down with Matt from IGN to talk about the shape of the Wii, the PS3 Move and Natal among many other things. Unfortunately and unsurprisingly, the NOA exec was not very forthcoming with Zelda news even with Matt’s best attempts at trying to squeeze info out of him. E3 can’t come round quick enough.
Interesting read though.
IGN: So — you got anything that can compete against Sony’s revolutionary Move controller and sub-controller?
[Reggie leans back in his chair and laughs for several moments.]
Reggie Fils-Aime: So, if imitation is the most sincere form of flattery then I am blushing I’m so flattered.
You know, I didn’t see the announcement. I did spend some time at the booth and saw some of what they were demonstrating and I think the question isn’t how will we react — I think the question is, so what is it that’s going to be compelling to the consumer in what they’re doing? From our standpoint, motion control is core to what we do. We believe that we’ve brought a range of different experiences that utilize the motion controller and we pride ourselves on being innovators in the space and we’re going to continue to innovate. I think the key question is, how will they respond when we continue to innovate if this is their best effort?

In a recent interview with Forbes, Reggie has been clearing the air about where the company stands in relation to Apple as a competitor, new technology for their hardware such as HD and 3D and plenty of other topics.
Reggie Fils-Aime on Apple and their technology…
“There’s been no data to suggest an encroachment on our business. The iPhone has been out on the marketplace for just a couple of years. In the last two years we’ve set two records on our DS business, last year selling over 11.2 million units. So there’s been no evidence that we’ve lost any business to that competitor.
On the other hand, we recognize that consumers have a limited amount of entertainment time, and anything that takes entertainment time away from the Nintendo DS, DSi and Wii is a competitor. And so from that standpoint, we need to build experiences that are compelling and sticky, and that consumers can get excited about. That’s our challenge.”

With the PS3 and Xbox 360 expecting to launch their own motion controlled peripherals later this year to try and eat into some of the Wii’s market, many have predicted that Nintendo will be quick to release an update to their home console. After all the PS3 and Xbox 360 will both sport high-def graphics and motion controls leaving the Wii with only the latter.
However, Nintendo exec Reggie Fils-Aime, or as we like to call him, the Regg-meister, has insisted that the Wii still has a long life ahead of it and not to expect either a Wii 2 or updated Wii in the near future. Instead the company are focusing all their efforts in bringing the best experiences to the Wii with titles such as Zelda, Metroid and Mario Galaxy 2.
What do you think? Will Nintendo be left in the dark once the competitions motion control arrive or will the Wii be fine as it is? Tell us in

Gamespot caught up with everyone’s favourite NOA exec, Reggie Fils-Aime, at the E3 expo last week to find out what he thinks about Nintendo’s current state of affairs including their upcoming games, Sony and Microsoft’s new motion hardware and all the usual corporate babble that you would expect from someone in his position.
NOA boss Reggie Fils-Aime was pressed about what Retro Studios have been up to recently and if they will be showing anything at the expo.
“You know, the Retro folks are hard at work. We and they wanted to do something different than Metroid, to show their chops in a different area. More to come on that. We don’t have anything to reveal about Retro at this E3 but they are hard at work.”
Many suspect Retro to be involved in the development of a new Kid Icarus or Pilotwings game, though that is pure speculation. Reggie went on to clear up the release date of Super Mario Galaxy 2.
With E3 approaching faster than a speeding bullet, Nintendo have made public their Expo media details.
Before we get into that, Nintendo have said they are not limiting employees travelling to L.A. like Square Enix due to swine flu. While they are continuing to monitor the situation and advise to wear masks and wash hands regularly, all employees will be attending the show from Japan at the time of writing.
As far as the media briefing itself is concerned, Satoru Iwata, Reggie Fils-Aime and Cammie Dunaway will be this years speakers (no Miyamoto) and the focus is “all about the games” which is pleasing!

After Nintendo disappointed many fans with the lack of exciting news at last years E3 trade show, NOA head honcho – Reggie Fils-Aime has promised a stronger showing at this years show between 2nd – 4th June. Last year core gamers felt particularly short changed due to Nintendo’s insistence of showing mainly casual games. So what can we expect from them this year? Read more…
