The DS is getting on a bit now and many people have bought one. It’s had a great run and is home to loads of awesome games but now with the 3DS looming on the horizon, the end is near.
This is refelcted in the year-on-year sales which show a decline in sales of 26%. The Wii on the other hand had a 1% increase and while it’s good sales went up 1%, when compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3 at 119% and 76% respectively, it’s not looking too great right now for Nintendo hardware.
Xbox 360 +119%
PlayStation 3 +76%
Wii +1%
DS -26%
PSP -32%
What you need to keep in mind here though is that while there was a small increase in Wii sales, 1% on top of an already large sales number is still impressive and even the 360 and PS3 haven’t caught up with Wii sales even considering 119% and 76% increases, as you can see below:

Wedbush Morgan analyst on his predictions for a 3DS release date and pricing. I know Nintendo don’t sell hardware at a loss like Sony and Microsoft but fingers crossed they keep the price as close to the cost as possible!
“I expect the device to be available only on eBay for its first couple of months. I think that we Westerners won’t have an opportunity to buy before Christmas, so think that sales by Christmas will be limited to a few million in Japan… I see it having huge success as an upgrade device, with sales likely limited only by supply and price. My best guess is that they will price it around $250/£199/€250, so this may limit demand somewhat, and I doubt that Nintendo will manufacture more than 10 – 15 million the first full year… I think that the 3DS’s addressable market is really the current DS market and some overlap with the current PSP market. That’s still a huge market opportunity.”

Nintendo seem happy with July’s NPD data, though they are unlikely to say otherwise, even if Xbox outsold both DS and Wii individually.
Nintendo Sells More Than 650,000 Hardware Units in the U.S. in July
Nintendo sold more than 650,000 video game systems in July – more than any other company – according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks sales of video game products in the United States. The Nintendo DS™ family of systems sold nearly 400,000 in July, and Nintendo’s Wii™ console marked its 45th consecutive month of more than 250,000 units sold with July sales of nearly 254,000. These tallies bring the 2010 U.S. sales totals through the end of July for Nintendo DS to more than 3.4 million and Wii to more than 2.71 million.
Five of the top 10 best-selling games of July play on Nintendo systems. These include Super Mario Galaxy™ 2 for Wii at No. 4 with more than 192,000 sold, LEGO® Harry Potter™: Years 1-4 for Nintendo DS at No. 5 with nearly 142,000 sold, LEGO® Harry Potter™: Years 1-4 for Wii at No. 7 with more than 133,000 sold, DRAGON QUEST IX®: Sentinels of the Starry Skies™ for Nintendo DS at No. 8 with more than 132,000 sold and New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii at No. 9 with more than 128,000 sold.
July 2010 NPD sales aw the Xbox 360 take top spot thanks to the newly designed hardware, while DS and Wii have to settle for second and third respectively.

Nintendo haven’t blown their own trumpet for a while so this press release is a bit overdue!
The company have now sold over 30 million Wii’s in the US in 45 months. Not too shabby eh?!
Nintendo’s internal sales figures show that the Wii™ video game system has now sold 30 million units in the United States alone. This significant milestone was reached in just 45 months. This further establishes Wii as the fastest-selling console in the history of the industry, reaching this milestone 15 months faster than the next best-selling console.
Wii launched in November 2006 and ushered in a new era of video games. The built-in motion controls of the iconic Wii Remote™ controller drew millions of new players to the world of video games. Kids started playing with their parents and grandparents, people got up off the couch and got active, and seniors and baby boomers formed virtual bowling leagues.
“More than any other video game system in history, Wii has expanded the world of video games to new audiences,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “This milestone is another reminder that people want fun games they can play with others – all at a value-minded price.”
It’s guessing time again for the top two game analyst companies. Here’s how they expect the sales for July to pan out this year.

PSP increases its lead last week in Japan’s console sales and the PS3 saw a big leap into second too. Wii falls to fourth place while not much else changed, though the 360 seems to be very slowly gaining a bit of momentum.
