Sega announced ‘Super Monkey Ball: Step & Roll‘ a few days ago. We saw first footage and know it is designed with the balance board in mind but not much else was known.
However, new details have now surfaced courtesy of the latest Nintendo Power:
- New interface
- Main experience is the same
- AiAi, MeeMee, GonGon, Baby returning as playable characters
- Still can collect bananas in levels
- Wiimote control option available
- At least 7 worlds, ten stages each
- Themes are borrowed from Banana Blitz but layouts are completely original
- Visuals in the environments have improved
- Game will have new multiplayer minigames and some old ones
- See Saw Ball minigame – Above a target, drop monkey in the center by manipulating series of seesaws
- Minigames created with balance board in mind
- Still a feature Nintendo Power couldn’t discuss that “promises a fresh take on the series”

If we had to think of a good franchise to be used with the Wii’s balance board (apart from Wii Fit!) it would have to be Sega’s Super Monkey Ball. We can really imagine controlling AiAi and friends around the devious levels by shifting our weight around the Wii Fit controller. They seem like a good match and early next year it will become reality as ‘Super Monkey Ball: Step & Roll‘ has been announced by the Sonic creators.
Do you think it will be as good as we predict or a wasted opportunity?
