New Team Ninja head of development Yosuke Hayashi spoke with Gamasutra at TGS and gave an insight into what it’s like to develop for the 3DS.
“The 3DS in and of itself is easy to develop for. It’s a handheld platform, which makes it relatively easy from a development standpoint. But being 3D, other than just the specs, we have to figure out how to use it well, how to use that effect. That’s something we’re having fun with, trying to figure that out. Up until now, 3D [in games] has not been an everyday experience. We think that with the 3DS, this will be the first time that anybody can get a 3D experience just about anywhere. It’ll be just a part of everyday life. So we’re trying to put out a 3D fighting game and see how that goes, and learn from that experience. We’ll go from there to see where 3D should go, and how we can use 3D to make a deeper experience in the future.”

Well it’s not much of a delay and no doubt “Metroid: Other M” will be totally worth the wait.
What makes me laugh is the last sentence in Nintendo’s statement below – “A June 27 launch allows gamers to enjoy Sin & Punishment: Star Successor without having to rush through Super Mario Galaxy 2 (May 23).” It’s as though we couldn’t possibly be allowed two big games at once! How would we possibly cope to play them both!?
The launch date for Metroid: Other M has shifted to Aug. 31. As you may know, this game is the product of a unique partnership between longtime Metroid producer Yoshio Sakamoto, Team Ninja and many other individuals and groups, all of whom have set very high standards for this latest installment in the series. Although it’s taking slightly longer than expected to complete the project, we’re confident that fans will find it to be well worth the wait.
We’re striving to provide the best possible pacing for our summer game launches. A June 27 launch allows gamers to enjoy Sin & Punishment: Star Successor without having to rush through Super Mario Galaxy 2 (May 23).” – Nintendo statement

Damn this looks good! Here’s some brand-spanking new gameplay footage of “Metroid: Other M” for your viewing pleasure. The game is certainly faster paced than the Prime games and frankly, I can’t wait any longer to get to my grubby hands on it!
